Life With a Cockapoo: What to Expect as an Owner

What It’s Really Like Being a Cockapoo Owner (From Someone Who Lives It Every Day- Linda!)
If you’re thinking about getting a Cockapoo, or you already have one, you’ll know they’re not just a dog. They’re a full-on lifestyle.
As a Cockapoo owner, life becomes a mix of muddy walks, constant companionship, and wondering how something so small can take up so much space on the sofa.
And honestly? I wouldn’t change a thing.
The Cockapoo Personality: Affectionate, Loyal, and Slightly Bonkers
Cockapoos are a cross between a Cocker Spaniel and a Poodle, and they’ve somehow inherited the best (and most intense) traits from both.
They’re loving, playful, and incredibly people-focused. Jess follows me everywhere, kitchen, bathroom, even just moving from one room to another. Personal space? Not a thing anymore.
If you’re after a dog that’s independent and happy to be left alone for hours, a Cockapoo probably isn’t for you. But if you want a companion who is completely devoted, you’ll struggle to find better.
That Cute Face… and How It Gets Them Everything
Let’s talk about the cuteness.
The floppy ears, the soft curls, the teddy bear face, it’s next level. And the problem is… they know it.
Those eyes will absolutely be used to get extra treats, sneak onto furniture they’re not supposed to be on, and convince you that yes, they do need another walk.
And you’ll give in. Every time.
Living With a Cockapoo: Expect Energy (Lots of It)
One of the biggest surprises for many new Cockapoo owners is just how energetic they are.
This isn’t a “quick walk round the block and done” kind of dog. They need proper walks, playtime, and mental stimulation. Otherwise, they’ll make their own fun, which usually involves something you’d rather they didn’t destroy.
Think:
Chewed cushions, Missing socks, Random “treasures” proudly brought to you
Daily exercise and interactive play are essential. It’s part of the deal, but it’s also what makes them such fun to be around.
And if you’re anything like me, you quickly realise you need to be properly prepared every time you leave the house, treats, poo bags, phone, keys… it all adds up. Having a go-to dog walking bag that actually keeps everything in one place becomes a bit of a lifesaver.
Grooming a Cockapoo: The Reality Behind the Fluff
That gorgeous coat comes with responsibility.
Cockapoos need regular brushing (ideally a few times a week, if not daily), and trips to the groomers every 6–8 weeks to keep their coat manageable.
If you let it slide, matting can become an issue quite quickly, especially around the ears and legs.
It’s not low-maintenance, but it does become part of your routine. And there’s something quite nice about that one-to-one time.
Training: Clever… But They Know It
Cockapoos are bright. Really bright.
They tend to pick up training quickly, especially when food is involved. But they can also be a little cheeky and will test boundaries if you’re inconsistent.
You might find yourself thinking, “You definitely know what I just asked you to do.”
Positive reinforcement works best, and keeping training sessions short and fun makes a huge difference.
The Emotional Side of Owning a Cockapoo
This is the bit people don’t always talk about enough.
Cockapoos are incredibly in tune with their owners. They seem to sense your mood and respond to it, curling up next to you when you’re having a quiet day, or bouncing around when you’re full of energy.
They’re not just pets. They become part of your everyday life in a really meaningful way.
Which is probably why so many of us end up leaning fully into the “dog mum” life cosy hoodies, comfortable layers for early morning walks, and clothes you don’t mind getting covered in a bit of dog hair!
The Unexpected Perk: You’ll Never Be Ignored Again
Owning a Cockapoo turns even a quick walk into a social event.
People will stop you. They’ll ask questions. Other dog owners will chat. You’ll end up having conversations you never expected to have.
Your dog basically becomes your social ice-breaker.
The Downsides (Because There Are a Few)
As much as I adore Jess, it’s only fair to be honest.
Cockapoos can:
Struggle if left alone too long
Be prone to separation anxiety
Get over-excited when meeting people
Need a lot of time, attention, and consistency
It’s not always easy, but for most of us, it’s more than worth it.
So, What’s It Really Like Being a Cockapoo Owner?
It’s joyful, busy, sometimes chaotic… and completely heart-filling.
It’s early morning walks, muddy paws, and always having company—even when you nip to make a cup of tea.
It’s building your routine around your dog, finding the best walking spots, and never leaving the house without the essentials, treats, leads, and a bag that actually works for dog walks (once you have one, you won’t go back).
Most of all, it’s having a dog who loves you wholeheartedly, every single day.
And once you’ve had a Cockapoo, it’s hard to imagine life any other way.
If you’re deep in your Cockapoo era like me, you’ll know it’s the little things that make daily walks easier—and a bit more enjoyable too. From practical dog walking bags to cosy layers for chilly mornings, having the right bits just makes life with your dog that much better.
