🐾 Dive In! Why Dog Swims Are the Perfect Splash of Fun for You and Your Pup
Share
There’s nothing quite like seeing your dog leap joyfully into the water — ears flapping, tail wagging, and paws paddling! That’s why dog swims have become such a popular event across the UK. These dog-friendly swimming sessions offer a safe and controlled way for your furry friend to enjoy a splash about, meet other water-loving pups, and make some tail-wagging memories.
One of our favourite events of the year? The Shepton Mallet Lido Dog Swim, held at the end of the summer season — and it’s a must-visit for local dog lovers!
🌊 What Is a Dog Swim?
A dog swim is exactly what it sounds like: a swimming session where dogs (and sometimes their humans!) are invited to swim in a local pool or lido, usually after the regular season has closed to the public. These events have become increasingly popular, offering a fun, safe, and social experience for dogs of all shapes and sizes.
It’s a brilliant opportunity for your dog to:
- Cool off in the late summer heat
- Socialise with other dogs
- Get some exercise in a fun, low-impact way
- Try something new and exciting!
Some dog swims even offer doggy paddle races, treat stands, and photo ops — it’s not just a swim, it’s a full-on doggy day out!
🐕 Spotlight on: Shepton Mallet Lido Dog Swim
If you’re in Somerset, the annual Dog Swim at Shepton Mallet Lido is an absolute highlight.
Held at the very end of the outdoor swimming season, this event sees the lido open exclusively to dogs and their owners before it’s drained and cleaned for the winter. The pool is filled with happy splashing, excited barking, and wagging tails galore — and the atmosphere is always buzzing.
Here’s why locals (and even those from further afield!) love it:
🐶 Dogs of all breeds and sizes are welcome
👟 Humans can paddle or stay poolside
📸 It’s perfect for capturing fun, splashy photos
🛍️ Local stalls and refreshments often join the fun
🐾 It's a friendly, community-driven event
Whether your dog is a confident swimmer or just dipping their paws in for the first time, the Shepton Mallet Dog Swim is an inclusive, joy-filled way to end the summer.
🧼 What to Bring to a Dog Swim
Here’s what we recommend packing:
A towel for your pup (and probably for you too!)
Treats and water
A favourite toy for encouragement
A lead and collar for when you're not in the pool
A change of clothes if you plan to join them!
And of course, don’t forget a dog-themed treat for yourself too — our Jess and Tilly dog walking bags are perfect for events like this!

🐾 Final Thoughts
